One of the most popular and critically acclaimed of all the American New Wave films, Peter Bogdanovich’s black and white masterpiece bridges the classic old-time historical Hollywood cinema with the new 1970s generation. It is an episodic, bleak and mournful film depicting life in a forgotten one-horse town in Texas in 1951. We follow a group of high school leavers played by fresh faced movie unknowns as they come of age in this isolated part of America that is dying, both culturally and economically.

BOOK LAUNCH: New Wave, New Hollywood: Reassessment, Recovery, and Legacy

(this event is free but ticketed)

Wednesday 1 December, 5.30pm – 6.30pm

https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/new-wave-new-hollywood-9781501360404/

Prior to the film screening we will be hosting a panel event to celebrate the release of a book of essays about the New Hollywood movement, edited by Bangor University film staff Nathan Abrams and Gregory Frame. This free event will feature contributing authors to this volume in discussion about the history, significance and legacy of the American New Wave, fifty years since its supposed zenith (1971). During this period, Hollywood made a number of films still beloved by many people the world over. However, this collection seeks to reveal who was left out of this story, and why, considering questions of race, gender, genre and authorship as part of a more inclusive analysis of the time. Our contributors will talk about their work, how it questions received wisdom, and reveals previously marginalised filmmakers (and the films they made) under the banner of ‘New Wave, New Hollywood’.

THE RESCUE (12A)

Cwmwl Tystion / Riot!

Tomos Williams returns to Pontio with the second iteration of his Cwmwl Tystion project.

Tuesday 30 November

7.30pm

Theatr Bryn Terfel

£14 / £12

Internationally renowned musicians Soweto Kinch and Orphy Robinson join young Welsh vocalist Eady Crawford and the top-class rhythm section of Aidan Thorne and Mark O’Connor, alongside live visuals from Simon Proffitt for an immersive live performance entitled Cwmwl Tystion II / Riot!

The band will perform a newly composed Suite incorporating elements of jazz, hip-hop, the avant-garde and Welsh folk music. The name ‘Cwmwl Tystion’ is derived from a poem by the great Welsh poet Waldo Williams, while the themes for each movement will be drawn from various riots in Welsh history. Deeply inspired by the work of Wadada Leo Smith, John Zorn and Don Cherry, issues of race and identity will also be explored in the music.

‘The Cwmwl Tystion Suite’ has been funded by Tŷ Cerdd, and the tour is made possible by generous Arts Council of Wales financial support.

“an original contemporary jazz soundscape with a Welsh identity” – New Sound Wales
