Sunday 29 May, 2pm
£13/£11/£10
Ralph Fiennes (Antony & Cleopatra) leads the cast in David Hare’s (Skylight) blazing account of the most powerful man in New York, a master manipulator whose legacy changed the city forever. For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses exploited those in office through a mix of charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers, he created parks, bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors. Faced with resistance by protest groups campaigning for a very different idea of what the city should become, will the weakness of democracy be exposed in the face of his charismatic conviction? Live form the Bridge Theatre, London.

On what would have been his birthday we remember the 40th anniversary of the untimely death of one of only a handful of true 20th century film geniuses, Germany’s Rainer Werner Fassbinder, at only 37 years old. The huge talent behind the world-wide success of the New German Cinema in the 1970s was an extraordinarily prolific director who produced a steady stream of controversial masterpieces that still astound audiences today.
Come and marvel at two of his most successful early melodramas – one a cherished World cinema classic that confronts racism and love that exists across boundaries between an elderly cleaning lady and an immigrant worker, the other his first audience success, is the tale of an ordinary man struggling to succeed, living though a life of quiet desperation. Both tales are unforgettable.

Benediction (12A)
Terence Davies, 2021, 137
Cast – Jack Lowden, Harry Lawtey, Peter Capaldi
Saturday 4 – Thursday 9 June
£7.50 standard / £6.50 over 60 / £6 student / £5.50 child (under 18s)
BENEDICTION explores the turbulent life of First World War poet, Siegfried Sassoon, through the eyes of the revered filmmaker Terence Davies. Sassoon was a complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in the First World War and was decorated for his bravery but who became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war when he returned from service. He became one of the leading war poets of the era. Adored by members of the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and stage world, he embarked on affairs with several men as he attempted to come to terms with his homosexuality. At the same time, broken by the horror of war, he made his life’s journey a quest for salvation, trying to find it within the conformity of marriage and religion. His story is one of a troubled man in a fractured world searching for peace and self-acceptance, something which speaks as meaningfully to the modern world as it did then.
BENEDICTION is screening as part of Sinema Pontio’s PRIDE2022 programme
