A light display on Bangor Pier, which showed the city’s solidarity with Ukraine, has been switched off after twenty lightbulbs were stolen from the display.

The blue and yellow lights have been on display since March this year, after Bangor City Council changed the colour of the bulbs to match those of the Ukrainian flag, showing the city’s support for Ukraine, after Russia invaded the country.

The Grade II listed pier has recently been named as the National Piers Society’s pier of the year, with judges saying it “boasts the best panorama of views of any pier in the UK”. Sights from the Gwynedd structure include the Menai Strait and Anglesey, Llandudno and the mountains of Snowdonia.

Following the theft of the lights, Avril Wayte, chair of the Friends of Bangor Garth Pier Group, said: “Awful news to report, I am so angry right now.

“20 light bulbs were stolen last night off the pier. As a consequence, for safety reasons, the lights in support of Ukraine have had to be switched off, possibly for the foreseeable future.”

Local Councillor Nigel Pickavance, who made the original request to illuminate the pier in the colours of the Ukrainian national flag, said: “This is such a shame to read. What a mindless act of anti-social behaviour.”
