Enid Griffith, a long‑standing member of Soroptimist International Bangor & District and a former Deputy Headteacher at Ysgol Friars in Bangor, has passed away at the remarkable age of 102.
Enid was born in Carmel, Gwynedd. She began her teaching career at Manchester School for Girls before returning to North Wales in the late 1940s, where she served with distinction at Bangor School for Girls and later became the Deputy Head of Friars School in Bangor.
Having joined Soroptimists in 1973, Enid’s dedication to the organisation was distinct. She served as President in 1979, contributed significantly to annual programme planning, and was later honoured with Honorary Membership for her unwavering commitment.
She was also a member and supporter of the Friends of Treborth Botanic Garden for over 20 years, later becoming an Honorary Member of the Group.
Enid celebrated her 100th birthday in September 2022 with Soroptimist members at Ty Golchi. The event highlighted not just her longevity but the inspiration she provided to younger generations of Soroptimists.
Enid passed away at Ysbyty Gwynedd on May 18, 2025, and her funeral service will be held on Friday, 13th June, 2.30 pm, at Bangor Crematorium.
A heartfelt tribute on the Bangor Soroptimist website described Enid as “a dedicated and committed member,” highlighting the Honorary Membership she received in recognition of her many years of service.
“Her intelligence, resourcefulness, and warmth were remembered with great affection by those who knew her. Enid’s presence had a profound and lasting impact, not only within the Soroptimist community but also in the lives of the many students and colleagues she inspired throughout her distinguished career in education.
“Enid will be dearly missed by her friends at Bangor & District Soroptimists. Rest in peace, dear Enid.”
