Eagle eyed viewers who are following the new Channel 4 mini-series – ‘It’s a Sin’ – will have noticed a few scenes that were filmed in Bangor.
Set mainly in London from 1981-1991, the series follows a group of friends, all in their late teens and early twenties, who move to London in 1981 and have their lives turned upside down by HIV/AIDS, spanning a decade until 1991.
Scenes in the programme and by the sea, supposedly the Isle of Wight, were actually filmed in Rhos-on Sea, Conwy and Bangor.
The filming took place in October 2019 and only make up a small part of the series, but sharp-eyed viewers will have seen the scenes in Bangor, which were filmed at night. Bangor Pier features briefly in Episode 2, Siliwen Road and a scene on the beach at Siliwen in Episode 4.
The production was assisted by Wales Screen, a team within the Welsh Government ‘s Creative Wales. A spokesperson for the creative body told North Wales Live: “Officials helped the production team to find North Wales locations for this drama, which was written and created by Swansea-born Russell T Davies. The team filmed for a few days in Rhos-on-Sea, Conwy and in Bangor, Gwynedd.”
The show has received critical acclaim, with praise directed towards Davies’s writing and the performance of the cast, particularly Olly Alexander (as Ritchie Tozer), Lydia West (as Jill Baxter), Callum Scott Howells (as Colin “Gladys” Morris-Jones), Oman Douglas (as Roscoe Babatunde) and Keeley Hawes (as Valerie Tozer, Ritchie’s mother).
All five episodes of ‘It’s a Sin’ are now available to watch on All4, with weekly episodes aired weekly on Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
