The Member of the Senedd for the Arfon constituency has expressed her solidarity with the Gwynedd Cabinet Member for Education following a targeted campaign against the councillor.
Siân Gwenllian made the comments during an intervention on the floor of the Senedd, whilst asking for an update from the Education Minister on the roll out of the Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) Code in Wales. The code sets out the mandatory learning of RSE in the Curriculum for Wales, and has attracted opposition from pressure groups.
Speaking today, Siân Gwenllian MS referred to Beca Brown, the Gwynedd councillor for the Llanrug ward and Gwynedd’s Cabinet Member for Education. In late August police were brought in as a Gwynedd Council meeting over the code was interrupted by the Public Child Protection Wales group (PCPW).
According to the MS for Arfon in Gwynedd, Cllr Beca Brown has been a victim of an “unacceptable, targeted campaign.”
Requesting an update on the introduction of the code, Siân Gwenllian MS said: “Plaid Cymru are fully supportive of these changes, but we’re also aware that misinformation is being spread, and that protests have been held professing these untruths. These protests include a demonstration in Caernarfon within my constituency.
“Gwynedd’s Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr. Beca Brown has been victim of an unacceptable, targeted campaign against her – and I reiterate my solidarity with her.”
The MS concluded her contribution in the Senedd calling on the Minister for action: “I wish for the Minister to share with us what the Government intends to do to fight against the spreading of misinformation on this matter that leads to inappropriate behaviour by some people within society?”
