Get the Euros off to a great start by placing a bid on a pair of goalkeeper gloves match worn and signed by Wales goalkeeper, Wayne Hennessey. The gloves were worn during the World Cup qualifying match against Austria in 2016.
The Bangor born goalkeeper has won 95 caps for Wales. He made his full international debut for Wales in a 2–2 friendly draw against New Zealand on 26 May 2007 and has since established himself as his country’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Hennessey played in all ten of Wales’ qualifying matches for UEFA Euro 2016, conceding just four times, as they reached their first major international tournament since the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He was named in Wales’ 23-man squad for the tournament as first choice goalkeeper but was forced to miss the opening game of the tournament, a 2–1 victory over Slovakia, after suffering a back spasm prior to the match, being replaced by Danny Ward. Hennessey started the remaining matches as Wales progressed to the semi-finals of the tournament before losing to Portugal.
On 3 September 2020, Hennessey reached his 35th clean sheet with Wales in a 1–0 UEFA Nations League win over Finland, to break the previous record held by Neville Southall.
Team Irfon
The auction is in aid of #TeamIrfon, launched in 2014 by Nurse Manager Irfon Williams. After starting treatment on the Alaw Cancer Unit in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, Irfon decided to start a campaign to raise money for wigs for others receiving chemotherapy on the unit.
As Irfon’s treatment progressed, so too did his resolve to help other families affected by cancer. His campaign gathered momentum, touching the hearts of people in local communities and much further afield. Just before he died from bowel cancer in 2017, Irfon and his many supporters had raised over £150,000 with the specific aim of providing improved services and facilities to help preserve people’s mental health as they face a cancer diagnosis or a loss of a family member.
Irfon’s legacy lives on, and his wife Becky now oversees #TeamIrfon alongside Manon, a Matron from cancer services. Together Becky and Manon, working closely with NHS staff and committed volunteers and supporters of all ages, are ensuring that donations given to #TeamIrfon continue to help local people in the way that Irfon always wished them to be and that local people can go on enjoying community focussed fundraising events and activities which promote fun, laughter and team spirit – exactly as Irfon always intended.
