River Island has announced the closure of its Bangor store on Saturday, March 15, 2025. The decision is believed to be part of a broader strategy aimed at streamlining operations and reducing costs.

The closure comes after significant financial challenges faced by the fashion retailer, including a pre-tax loss of £32.2 million for the year ending December 30, 2023. This loss was attributed to a 15% decline in sales and investments in new concept stores.

In January 2025, River Island enlisted consultants from AlixPartners to help manage costs and improve profitability in light of upcoming tax increases. Although the full scope of their advisory work remains undisclosed, it is clear that there will be no further restructuring or additional store closures beyond those already planned.

The decision to close the Bangor store reflects the company’s need to address rising operational costs and increasing competition in the retail sector. This move aligns with River Island’s efforts to adapt to the changing retail landscape and maintain financial stability.

Bangor High Street has seen several high street retailers close in recent years, including H&M, Peacocks, and TopShop, resulting in a notable increase in vacant storefronts. The closure of the River Island store highlights the broader challenges that brick-and-mortar retailers face in the current economic climate.

To address these challenges, River Island is focusing on enhancing its digital presence and optimising its remaining physical stores to better serve its customers. According to an in-store notice, the nearest River Island store will now be located in Llandudno.
