Menter Iaith Bangor will be holding a ‘Welsh in the Community’ Discussion Panel at Menter Iaith Bangor’s Popdy Centre, Lon Popty, Bangor, on Wednesday 25th of October, 6.30-8pm.

The aim of the meeting is to discuss the challenges and potential solutions that exist in trying to promote the Welsh language, with the focus on promoting Welsh among parents with young children, young people, leisure groups and Welsh learners.

Experts who are involved in promoting the Welsh language, will be sharing new and creative ideas that promote the use of Welsh in the local community.

Several groups already exist in Bangor which promote the use of Welsh, such as ‘Criw Bangor’ a Welsh learners choir, a weekly bilingual story session is held in Bangor Library and a Welsh yoga class.

Principal researcher, Dr Rhian Hodges of Bangor University’s School of Social Sciences, explained: “This is a great opportunity to extend and develop the Toolkit for Promoting the Welsh Language which was launched during the summer. It’s beneficial to bring academics and practitioners together to discuss language planning strategies and how they are put into practice at a community level.”

Co-researcher and organiser, Dr Cynog Prys, also of Bangor University added: “It’s great to get representatives of the public and private sectors taking part in this Panel. Both sectors have an important role to play in promoting community language use. This is the first of two Discussion Panels to be held at the Popdy Centre as part of a new Popdy Trafod Iaith series organised by Bangor University and Menter Iaith Bangor to discuss community language matter.”
