It may be the shortest month of the year but there’s plenty of variety on show in Pontio’s February Cinema programme.
February is definitely the month for lovers and heroes of all descriptions, some highly anticipated award winning foreign releases and a visit from a certain Welsh doctor who can speak to the animals!
Hollywood’s latest version of the Bonnie and Clyde/Thelma and Louise myth with the perfect date movie for 2020 when QUEEN & SLIM arrives in time for Valentine’s week.
This is a bold and brilliant contemporary tale of lovers on the run created by Beyonce’s favourite video director Melina Matsoukas.
Romance also comes centre stage as part of Pontio’s LGBT+ History Month celebrations with the sensational same sex romance PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN ON FIRE playing on the week of release.
Over the school half term the locally filmed DOLITTLE blockbuster arrives at Popntio, starring Robert Downey Jr, make sure you look out for shots of Menai Bridge and the Straits.
The brand new biopic of Welsh hero Gareth Jones in MR.JONES, the true story of a fearless journalist who faced down Stalin’s lies and told the world the truth about Communist Russia and the devastating Ukrainian famine in the 1930’s.
Some more modern heroes are featured in our Native American tale NEITHER WOLF NOR DOG and XY CHELSEA, a documentary portrait of the whistleblower, and currently still incarcerated activist, Chelsea Manning.
Fun times are also on offer with SING-ALONG FROZEN 2 screenings, the musical KINKY BOOTS:THE MUSICAL and Armando Iannucci’s joyous Charles Dickens adaptation THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD.
Cinema co-ordinator Emyr Glyn Williams said: “The New Year is always an exciting time in the cinema world, with award season titles fighting for screen space with must-see brand new films, all bringing light to the audience over the cold, dark winter months.
“I believe that February’s list of films definitely offers something for everybody out there as well as a few surprises, should you be feeling bold!
“I wonder how many of you will be able to resist the lure of Korean masterpiece PARASITE when it arrives – easily the most talked about film of recent times and possibly the first foreign language film to have triumphed in the Best Picture Oscar category come February’s big awards night.”
