North Wales Police have provided an update in relation to the fatal road traffic collision on Britannia Bridge during the early hours of this morning (Thursday, 20th January).

 

The investigation to establish the circumstances of the four-vehicle collision continues.

One lane on the eastbound carriageway was re-opened shortly before 12:30pm. One lane on the westbound carriageway has now also reopened following the recovery of vehicles and clearing of the road.

The man who sadly died was 52 years-old and was from the Amlwch area. His next of kin have been informed and they are being supported by a specially trained Family Liaison Officer.

The man who was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Officers arrested a 38-year-old local HGV driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody at this time.

Sergeant Jason Diamond of the Roads Policing Unit continues to appeal to anybody who may have been travelling along the A55 just prior to the collision which happened shortly before 3am, and who may have dash cam footage to contact officers. He said: “I am aware of the significant delays on the road network today and I would like to thank the motoring public for their continued patience.

“Throughout the day we have been working with partner agencies to re-open the road as soon as possible.

“Our investigation is well underway and I am appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the collision and who are yet to speak to us, or to anybody who may have dash cam footage, to contact us as soon as possible.”
