North Wales Police have appealed for witnesses following a serious accident last night, Wednesday 21st February 2018, on the A55 between Junction 11-12, near One Stop services at Llandygai. It is understood that a car was travelling in the wrong direction down the A55 prior to the accident at approximately 21:45hrs.
Police have reported this morning that a man has died and another seriously injured following the accident.
A Nissan car, which was travelling in the wrong direction, collided with a silver Hyundai.
All three emergency services attended but sadly the driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor by ambulance and he has since been transferred to hospital in Stoke with serious, life-changing injuries.
Sergeant Raymond Williams of the Roads Policing Unit said: “Sadly this is now being investigated as a fatal road traffic collision and I am appealing to anybody who may have seen the car travelling in the wrong direction to contact us.”
The road was closed whilst officers from the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit carried out their initial enquiries, and later re-opened shortly after 4am this morning.
Anybody who may have information is asked to contact officers at the Western Roads Policing Unit on 101 quoting reference number W022257.
North Wales Police are not yet in a position to release the deceased’s details.”
Following the accident the East Bound carriageway remained closed for several hours and one lane of the West Bound carriageway was closed to assist emergency services attending the incident.
Diversions were in place for East Bound traffic, HGV’s were diverted down the A5 towards Betws Y Coed while vehicles less than 9.5 tonnes were diverted via Tal Y Bont. The road has now been re-opened.
Sergeant Leigh Evans of the Roads Policing Unit, North Wales Police said “At approximately 2145hrs last night, North Wales Police and other Emergency Services responded to the scene of a road traffic collision on the A55 near to Llandygai, Gwynedd involving two vehicles.
“It is believed one of the vehicles was travelling in the wrong direction along the A55. An investigation is underway and we’d like to hear from anyone who was travelling along this stretch of road at the time and may have witnessed the collision or events leading up to it to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 0800 555 111 and quote reference W022257.”
