A proposed development, which could see an artificial ski slope built in Bangor, is likely to be approved later today.

Plans to build a ski and snowboard slope on Glanrafon Hill have been unveiled for the first time, with a planning application submitted to Gwynedd Council.

The notoriously steep hill, which links upper Bangor with the city centre, will be used for skiing, snowboarding and sledging. There will also be a ski lift operating 24hrs a day, to transport not only participants back up to the top of the hill, but also students on their way home after a night out in Bangor.

The application reads: “The ski slope would be the first of its kind in Bangor and the surrounding area. This presents a unique and desirable attraction for the local residents and students, which would also attract visitors from further afield.

“The plans have been designed with Glanrafon’s naturally steep incline in mind and would have minimal impact on the local landscape.”

The plans also include a play area and picnic area at the bottom of the hill and linked to the new College Park development.

Discounted access to the Ski Slope will be available based on  postcode, ensuring local people can also enjoy the facility and encourage the next generation of winter sport athletes.

A spokesperson for the development – known as ‘Ski-rafon’ – said: “The development will make a huge difference to the area and attract thousands of people into Bangor every year.

“However, we are very mindful this should also be a facility for the local community and local schools and colleges.

“It is also anticipated the facility will provide high level training to allow local sports people access to train for snow sport competitions.

“We would love to produce high level athletes from right here in Bangor and maybe one day an Olympic medal winner or even a Bangor Bobsleigh team.”

Great Facility

Local Councillor Michael McMichael said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea, I completely support this project.

“I’ve seen the speed that recycling boxes and bins come flying down that hill, so it will be a great facility.

“There might be an issue stopping at the bottom of the hill and with the traffic on the Deiniol Road, but I’m a strong believer that you always have to take a chance in life. I’m sure it will be fine and we’ll be able to keep any injuries and fatalities to a minimum.”

Ski Lift

Glanrafon is commonly known as ‘B*tch Hill’ amongst students at Bangor University, because of its steep incline and the fact it’s a b*tch to walk up sober or drunk.

Third year Environmental Science student Katie said: “I’ve been walking up and down Glanrafon Hill every day for the last three years and it never gets any easier, I still can’t breathe when I get to the top.

“I love the idea of the ski lift, I’m not particularly interested in skiing or snowboarding, but it’s going to be a huge help to students who have to walk up that hill, especially when they’re drunk.”

A decision on the ski slope will be made before 12pm today.
