Plans have been approved to build 10 affordable homes on the site of the former Ysgol Babanod Coed Mawr (Coed Mawr Infant School) in Bangor.
The demolished school – which was built in 1960’s – closed in 2018 amid a £12m shake-up of education in the city.
Planning committee members followed officers’ recommendations to approve the scheme with conditions last week. Eleven members voted in favour of the development, with only one abstention and none against.
The plans are part of a wider scheme by Gwynedd Council, to provide 1,500 affordable homes by 2027, called the Ty Gwynedd Project.
The development will be the first houses built by Gwynedd Council for over 30 years. The school was demolished as part of the primary provision reorganisation within Bangor with Ysgol y Garnedd and Ysgol y Faenol modernisation and improvement to replace the educational facility on this site.
The houses will be ‘intermediate affordable homes’ to buy or rent for local people which will adhere to the design principles: Affordable, Adaptable, Sustainable, Energy Efficient and Healthy.
Plans for the site include 6 x three bedroom houses and 4 x two bedroom houses for the intermediate market, namely for local people who are not eligible for social housing but cannot afford to buy or rent on the open market either.
WHO ARE THE HOUSES FOR?
For local people who are not eligible for social housing but cannot buy on the open market either.
When the houses become available in 2023 eligible applicants registered with Tai Teg will be able to apply to buy or rent one of the properties in Coed Mawr.
Applicants who have lived for 5 years or more in the Dewi, Hirael, Pentir and Hendre wards will initially be able to apply. There will then be an opportunity for applicants from other wards in Bangor, namely Menai, Deiniol, Hirael, and Garth.
HOW CAN I APPLY?
If you are interested in living in one of the Tŷ Gwynedd houses on the Coed Mawr site, you can find out if you are likely to qualify by looking at the Tai Teg and Registration criteria. When the houses become available eligible applicants will be able to apply for them.
