The new series of ‘Ward Plant‘ at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor will begin on 8 January at 8.25pm on S4C. The popular series follows the patients and staff on the children’s wards at the hospital.
Ward Plant is filmed on Dewi Ward and Minffordd Ward at Ysbyty Gwynedd and the series focuses on the young patients’ stories as they receive treatment for everything from leukemia to crayons stuck in ears, whilst also following the doctors and nurses’ daily routines of providing care.
The series was filmed for five weeks leading up to Christmas, you will see how the ward deals with child patients from the moment they enter the ward, to the time they are well enough to go home.
Some patients are well known to viewers as they have been featured on previous series. There are also many new patients who enter the ward, and the aim is ‘to take viewers along’ with the patients as they seek medical attention.
One notable story in this series involves a teenager who has to travel to America for special radiotherapy in one episode. The series also followed the lives of some of the ward staff, finding out why they became involved with paediatric care, and why it means so much to them to help the poorly children.
Some of the hospital staff have become very popular from previous series, including Dr. Moore, who is from the Caribbean, but has learnt Welsh in order to help to get to know the children better.
Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor treats more than 5,000 children from north west Wales each year. Last year 3,949 children were treated on Dewi Ward and 1,057 children on Minffordd Ward – the two wards providing children’s care locally.
Series producer Sioned Morys has been a frequent visitor to Ysbyty Gwynedd over the last few years as her six year old daughter Begw has had to have regular treatment on Dewi Ward and Minffordd Ward since she was born.
“I know from experience how hard the nurses, doctors and other staff work on the two wards and this series is a way of paying tribute to them,” said Sioned.
For non-Welsh speakers, English subtitles are available.
