A new mural in Bangor has brightened up the High Street and brings a simple message of positivity, ‘Be Kind’.
The mural, painted in front of the former “Johnny-Six” Butchers shop on the High Street, was painted by local artists Pete Jones. This is part of a wider project by the City council to improve the visual appearance of the High Street area.
Pete said: “I was asked to create a design that gave a positive message and following a short chat with Fiona Owens, Manager at Canolfan Abbey Road, we agreed that the simple message would be “Byddwch yn Garedig” / “Be Kind”.
“I wanted it to be colourful and used the idea of the Town Clock being some sort of Victorian Love Generator throwing hearts into the atmosphere!
“I also wanted to reflect the wonderful multi-cultural population that we have in Bangor, something that makes the City unique in the region. I have included symbols of some of main religious groups in the top right-hand corner (Including a “gap” for those who do not have an organised faith).
“There are also a couple of small acknowledgements to the music and football heritage of the City with the inclusion of two-tone “Ska’n’Soul” and “1876” hearts.
“I do not consider myself to be a mural artist, I’m much happier by an easel, this mural was hand drawn without any stencils and in that sense is “old-School”. I do hope that people will see this as a positive and colourful addition to the High Street.”
