Several Guinness World Record attempts were made at Pontio in Bangor on St. David’s Day 2021.
Despite Wales’ national lockdown disrupting the traditional celebrations, Welsh language television channel S4C made sure that it was still a memorable day……by facilitating a whole load of record-breaking!
Each record celebrated a unique aspect of Welsh tradition or culture and Ten World Records were broken in celebration of the day across Wales.
Tudur Phillips, who is an award-winning professional clog dancer and presenter, is no stranger to record-breaking.
Last year he broke the record for the most candles extinguished by jump heel clicks in one minute, snuffing out 55 candles, extinguishing a candle in this manner is a move used in traditional Welsh clog dancing. Unfortunately he narrowly missed out this year on his attempt to better that record.
Tudur wasn’t finished yet and he wanted to continue to promote Welsh clog dancing in his attempts, he also went for the world record in handkerchief jumping! His attempt for most jumps over a handkerchief in 30 seconds was successful, with 45 jumps! A new World Record!
Most people in a online singing video relay
There’s nothing more rousing on St. David’s Day than the sound of a Welsh choir. However, due to the current national lockdown, choirs are unable to congregate and sing together.
The Côr-ona Choir (UK) had a plan to combat this. Started by Catrin Angharad Jones during the first lockdown in March 2020, ‘Côr-ona!’ is an open Facebook group for sharing music virtually.
Catrin is a folk singer from Anglesey and also a school teacher in Ysgol Y Graig in Llangefni.
The Côr-ona Choir attempted the record for the most people in an online singing video relay to carry a tune together virtually. They achieved the record on their final attempt, with 55 participants.
Strongman Reuben Hughes, from Llangybi, narrowly missed out on his attempt to bend as many 6” nails in one minute and bending steel bars with his knee, despite his amazing show of strength he just missed out on a new world record..
