Arfon MP Hywel Williams has shown his support in the Houses of Parliament for the campaign to make Bangor the first plastic free city in Wales.

Mr Williams submitted an EDM (Early Day Motion) for the Plastic Free Bangor campaign, which could later be debated by Parliament.

EDM1536 read: “This House welcomes and supports the Plastic Free Bangor campaign in its mission to make Bangor the first plastic free city in Wales; celebrates the efforts of Harry Riley and Dr Christian Dunn (Bangor University) for their energy and enthusiasm in leading the campaign; recognises the harmful impact plastic is having on the planet worldwide and highlights our collective responsibility to tackle this problem; and commends Plastic Free Bangor and similar projects that bring together communities to make real change and inspire others to do the same.”

EDMs are used to put on record the views of individual MPs or to draw attention to specific events or campaigns. By attracting the signatures of other MPs, they can be used to demonstrate the level of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view.

Plaid Cymru MPs Jonathan Edwards, Ben Lake, Liz Saville-Roberts as well as Jim Shannon, Democratic Unionist Party, and Christopher Stephens of the Scottish National Party have supported the motion.

The Plastic Free Bangor campaign, which is led by Harry Riley a third-year student at Bangor University, aims to convince businesses and members of the public to stop using certain types of single-use plastics.

The campaign was inspired by Bangor University lecturer Dr Christian Dunn’s very successful ‘Straw Free Chester Campaign’ which has gained national TV coverage.
