Maesgeirchen Boxing Club in Bangor has won a £2,500 funding award as part of the ‘Your Community, Your Choice’ awards, which will be used to buy much needed equipment for the club.
The money comes from a special fund, set up by North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones, which uses cash seized from criminals to help community groups in North Wales.
Community groups were invited to apply for the cash and successful applications were then put to the public vote. The public voting period closed on 1st December and the winners were notified this evening, with Maesgeirchen Boxing Club being one of two successful projects in Gwynedd.
The standard of applications received this year was very high, and there was a tremendous response to the public vote with almost 10,000 votes being cast.
The funding will now help purchase much needed gym and boxing equipment for the club, which has been run for almost 30 years by a well-known former champion, Brian ‘Bach’ Williams.
There is a high demand for Club membership and being able to obtain more equipment will allow more young people to have the opportunity to participate. Young people of all ages, from the age of 6, train at the Club.
Local Councillor Nigel Pickavance said: “It’s Brilliant news that £2,500 worth of boxing equipment on the way to Maes G Boxing Club! Thank you so much to everyone who voted for Brian Bach’s boxing Club. Your support is appreciated”
North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones said: “These awards are important because they involve the community and the communities decide where the money can best be spent.
“A lot of what we fund is aimed at providing something for young people to get involved with in their spare time rather than being tempted to commit crime or indulge in anti-social behaviour. We want to support communities so they are able to take responsibility for their own areas.”
