Bangor Cathedral was filled with candlelight and community spirit last night as Tenovus Cancer Care returned with its Lovelight concert. The event blended music, reflection and festive celebration, continuing a tradition that has grown over the last 30 years.
“We began organising more of them centrally in 2009, but they really began to grow from 2010 when we set up our Sing With Us choirs – choirs for anybody who has been impacted by cancer.” Vicky Green, Tenovus Regional Fundraising Manager.
As in previous years, volunteers played a vital role in ensuring last night’s concert ran smoothly. They welcomed attendees at the cathedral doors, served refreshments, sold raffle tickets and lit the candles during the reflective moment of the evening.
“We couldn’t do these events without our incredible volunteers. They help to make sure our Lovelight concerts are a truly special night. And not forgetting our wonderful performers and hosts who gave up their time – we wouldn’t have a concert without them.” Vicky said.
One of the evening’s most moving parts, was the moment of reflection, offering comfort and space for remembrance for the attendees.
“Christmas is an enjoyable and happy time of year for many, but for others who have lost loved ones it can be incredibly challenging. Our moment of reflection gives the audience a chance to remember and honour all those affected by cancer. Each candle is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is light.” Vicky said.
Alongside this touching tribute, guests enjoyed performances from local artists including the Menai Bridge Brass Band, Bangor Sing with us Choir, Treffos Independent School, St Gerard’s School, Summer Jones and Harmony Bells- the triumphant trio introducing a 40’s swing element into Christmas Carols!
If you missed your chance last night, Tenovus Cancer Care is hosting 13 concerts in Wales and one in London to raise funds for its vital services, including the Support Line, which remains open 365 days a year.
“Last year we raised over £30,000, so it would be amazing if we could reach that again this year. Every ticket purchased, and donation given goes straight back into helping those in our local community.” Vicky explained.
Last night’s concert once again demonstrated the power of a community united through music, remembrance and hope. It stood as a glowing tribute to all those affected by cancer.
