A proposal has been submitted to redevelop the former Waterloo Inn public house and adjoining retail spaces into 13 self-contained residential flats, as part of a wider regeneration scheme. The iconic Bangor pub closed in 2020, and has remained shut since then, with its future uncertain.

The proposed development seeks to change the use of the former pub and part of the adjacent WH Smith and USC units to residential accommodation. Internal alterations would also see the combination and reconfiguration of two existing retail units to create new ground-floor stalls for retail purposes.

A previous pre-application focused solely on converting the lower ground floor of the Waterloo Inn into three residential flats. This specific element now forms part of the larger development.

Planning officials have highlighted the need for developers to justify the loss of the Waterloo Pub as a community facility, in accordance with the Joint Local Development Plan. Authorities also require evidence supporting the need for the type and number of housing units proposed, including an affordability assessment.

No other significant concerns have been raised by planning officers at this stage. Preliminary feedback suggests that issues relating to residential amenity and parking provision are likely to be acceptable.

Further details on the application and its progress can be found via Gwynedd Council’s planning portal.
