Gwynedd Council’s Property Development Team has been shortlisted for Constructing Excellence in Wales awards.

They were nominated in the ‘Client of the Year’ category by the Main Contractor on the new Ysgol Y Garnedd construction project in Bangor, Read Construction.

Councillor Craig ab Iago, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Property, said: “I am so pleased that the Property Development Team are in the running in this category. They continuously work extremely hard, and have been able to make progress with major capital projects like this despite the pandemic.

“This team is currently managing a number of projects across the Council’s services including building and renovating schools, developing specialist units in care homes, developing early years units, building projects in housing and more. All of which are  facing challenges because of Covid.

“I’ve had the privilege of going to see this new school, and I have to say I was extremely emotional when I saw the special building and thought of all the children who would benefit from the work. I am delighted to say that my Department has been responsible for this.”

The new Ysgol y Garnedd opened in October 2020.

In addition to the ‘Client of the year’ category, the partnership responsible for designing and building the school have been nominated for two other categories, the Integration and Collaboration award and the Digital Construction Award. Forming the partnership are Read Construction Holdings Ltd, Ainsley Gommon Associates, Caulmert, Davies Partnership and SP Projects.

Councillor Craig ab Iago added: “I would like to thank all the team for their hard work, not only on this project, but for all that they have achieved recently. I’m really looking forward to seeing Ysgol y Faenol in Penrhosgarnedd, which is in the process of being extended and refurbishment completed over the coming months.”

The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Senedd in Cardiff on 23 September.
