A once-vacant storefront in the heart of Bangor has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, as internationally acclaimed Cameroonian artist Mfikela Jean Samuel unveils his latest exhibition.

Located at 109 High Street, nestled between Wetherspoons and The Royal Tandoori, the newly repurposed space now hosts a striking collection of artworks celebrating Mfikela’s heritage and his artistic journey from Cameroon to North Wales.

Curated by poet and arts advocate Martin Daws, the exhibition is open to the public from 11 April to 5 May 2025, offering an immersive visual experience that bridges continents, cultures, and creative traditions.

Born and raised in Kumbo, Cameroon, Mfikela developed a love for art at a young age, often crafting his own pigments from natural materials. “Art is as essential to me as food, drink, or language,” he has said. That passion has since propelled him onto the international stage, with exhibitions across Europe and a growing global following.

His journey took a pivotal turn when an American Peace Corps volunteer discovered his early work, eventually leading to international recognition and gallery invitations in Germany and the Netherlands. Now based in North Wales after studying at Bangor University, Mfikela continues to explore the connection between his cultural roots and his new surroundings through art.

The exhibition features thirteen deeply personal works, beginning with Heritage 1, which Mfikela describes as “his soul,” and progressing through a visual narrative that merges traditional Cameroonian symbols with the inspiration drawn from the grey skies and natural beauty of North Wales.

“This is not just an art exhibition,” said curator Martin Daws. “It’s a celebration of migration, memory, and meaning — a dialogue between place and identity.”

The new space at 109 High Street will be open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to stop by, engage with the artwork, and learn more about the artist’s story and heritage.
