The community spirit shown by residents of Maesgeirchen, Bangor, during Covid-19 has been recognised by Welsh Government.

The area is one of five in North Wales to be awarded funding to build on the work that residents and community groups have done to support local people during the pandemic.

During the lockdowns of the past year, over 50 local volunteers have been involved in initiatives within Maesgeirchen. They have collected and delivered prescriptions, cooked and delivered thousands of weekly meals to over-70s in self-isolation, put together and delivered hundreds of fun activity packs to children and ensured anyone self-isolating has the food, fuel, essentials and support they need to get through it.

The success of the community-led support has meant that the area has been offered extra support and resources from Welsh Government, BCUHB and the local authority to keep responding to what the community needs as lockdown restrictions lift – this could mean anything from free Covid-19 home test kits to food delivery.

Community Development Worker Jess Silvester said: “As national support programmes like furlough come to an end, we’re showing what the role of localised support can be.

“The extra resources mean that local community groups here in MaesG can keep the activities going and keep support responsive as lockdown restrictions change.”
