Bangor City 1876 have appointed former City player Huw Griffiths as their new first-team manager following a difficult few weeks for the Cymru North club.
Griffiths returns to Bangor with extensive experience in Welsh football, having managed Welshpool Town, Cefn Druids and Caernarfon Town. He also previously served as assistant manager to Peter Davenport at Farrar Road.
The former centre-back joined Bangor City from Cefn Druids in 2001. He was part of the side that beat FK Sartid 1–0 at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground in a UEFA Cup qualifier in 2002, and played in that year’s Welsh Cup final against Barry Town.
His greatest managerial success came with Cefn Druids. Across two spells in charge, he guided the club to a Welsh Cup final, promotion to the Welsh Premier League and European football. He was named Welsh Premier League Manager of the Season in 2018.
Griffiths later managed Caernarfon Town, leading them to victory in the Cymru Premier play-off final in 2022. He left the club in March 2023.
His appointment follows the resignation of Michael Johnston after six years in charge. Sean Eardley, who subsequently took over as interim manager, has also stepped down.
Bangor have won just one of their last four league matches and suffered a 6–2 home defeat to Buckley Town on Friday night. They currently sit fifth in the Cymru North table with 16 points from nine games.
There has been better news in the Welsh Cup. Bangor progressed past Mold Alexandra last weekend after a 3–3 draw, winning the penalty shootout 5–4.
Announcing Griffiths’ arrival, the club described him as “a tenacious figure in Welsh domestic football and a familiar face to the City faithful”.
The club added: “Huw Griffiths arrives with a clear vision that aligns with those of the club’s, along with his ambition and determination to succeed — we’re delighted to have Huw on board.”
