Gwynedd Council’s Trading Standards team is warning shoppers and local businesses after counterfeit versions of the popular collectible “Labubu” dolls were discovered for sale in shops across the county. Officers say the fake toys pose serious safety risks to young children.

The counterfeit items, which mimic the popular “Pop Mart” Labubu figures, have been found to contain loose parts that could become choking hazards. Trading Standards officers have already seized several examples from stores and are continuing to inspect retailers throughout Gwynedd.

“These imitations are not only illegal but potentially dangerous,” said a council spokesperson. “We’re urging consumers to remain vigilant, and for businesses to double-check their stock.”

Buyers are being advised to look out for key warning signs that may indicate a fake product:

  • Poor quality or visible stitching

  • Hands or feet that break off easily

  • Eyes that may pop out

  • Missing legal safety labels, such as the CE or UKCA mark, or a UK-based supplier’s name and address

  • Prices that seem unusually low

Anyone who has purchased a Labubu doll and suspects it may be counterfeit is asked to report it by calling 01766 771000 or emailing safmas@gwynedd.llyw.cymru.

Businesses in Gwynedd that are unsure about the authenticity of their products are also encouraged to reach out to the council for advice and support.

Trading Standards officers will continue to carry out inspections over the coming weeks to ensure unsafe products are removed from shelves.
