Bangor City and Gwynedd Councillor Medwyn Hughes is urging his fellow City Councillors to back his proposal of moving the Council Yard from the main car park servicing the Garth area and the Victorian Pier.

In a meeting of the City’s Finance Committee Councillor Hughes said: “It makes no commercial sense to have the Council Yard / Depot so close to one of Bangor’s main attractions.

“There is no sensible reason to continue with the existing Council site which is a complete eyesore and a blot on this, one of the most beautiful parts of our historic City, and we should therefore be maximising and playing to our strengths moving forward.

Garth Pier is one of the main visitor and tourist attractions in the city and one in which the City Council have invested nearly 2 million pounds over recent years.

“The possibilities following the repositioning of the depot would be either more parking or the possibility of another commercial enterprise, either way the place would look better on the eye than what we have presently” said the Hendre Ward Councillor.

“This year we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Pier and its rich history, with many events being planned for later in the year with some exiting plans being discussed, including a new lighting system which will cost the Council another £7,000 and so now is the time to be thinking ahead and attracting others to the site.”

Although Councillor Hughes’ proposal was backed by the Finance Committee it now has to be confirmed by the full City Council

Councillor Hughes’ proposal will be put to the full Council at its next meeting in May.
