Staff at the Bangor Cancer Research UK shop are celebrating after reaching their 30th Anniversary. The store, which has recently been refurbished, first opened its doors in 1988 and since that time a long list of volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly to raise more than £1.9 million towards life-saving research.

The 30 year milestone was marked by a tea party on July 25th and current and past volunteers, supporters and customers were there to celebrate the occasion.

Shop Manager Graeme Mayfield said: “Cancer Research UK relies on the dedication and enthusiasm of its volunteers and I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped at the shop or supported us over the years.

“It’s thanks to them that we are still here 30 years on. And it’s thanks to them that we will beat cancer sooner.

“I’m very proud to be working with such a great team of loyal volunteers. Having lost a sister to cancer, I find the shop role very rewarding.

“Cancer Research UK receives no government funding for its life-saving research and so we are incredibly grateful to all the wonderful people who support us by shopping with us, making a donation or generously offering their time as volunteers.

One volunteer who attended the celebrations was Bronwen Edwards, who has been volunteering with the charity for 29 years. Bronwen, aged 68, initially decided to volunteer after being diagnosed with cancer herself and having a mastectomy, she said: “I enjoy the challenge of raising money for Cancer Research UK as well as the social interaction with customers and the satisfaction of helping others. Volunteering has become part of my life and it’s one of the best decisions I have made.”

Cancer Research UK is keen to recruit volunteers to help with everything from window dressing and pricing stock to manning the till and serving customers To find out more, just call into the shop at 216 High Street, Bangor.
