Can you help by donating your old Bangor football programmes to the archives at Bangor University? helping protect the history of football in Bangor for future generations?
Bangor University Archives and Special Collections recently received a donation from Joe Shooman of his back catalogue of Bangor City football programmes. It’s an impressive collection largely covering the period between 1984-1999, and includes many away matches, cup matches and European ties.
The team responsible for Archives and Special Collections at Bangor University are now hoping to raise awareness of this collection amongst fans, with a view of encouraging them to donate programmes to fill any gaps.
The donations need not be limited to match programmes but could also include photographs, fanzines, match posters or any documents related to football in Bangor.
Gwyn Williams, the senior archivist at Bangor University, said: “After speaking with Joe, we think that this would be an excellent way of protecting the heritage and history of football in the city. Documents here are carefully stored in secure acid free boxes under a controlled temperature and are available and accessible for members of the public to view by appointment.
“As regards donations of physical objects, artefacts, and paraphernalia, unfortunately we are not able to accept these sorts of materials as we specialise in documents and manuscripts so do not have the resources, space, or expertise to store them.
“We would also prefer that we receive donations rather than deposits (non-returnable). As we will spend time and resources cataloguing and storing items, we would prefer that contributors did not ask for their deposits back. The Archives are open to the public, so anyone can make an appointment to come and view our collections.
“Below is a link to a spreadsheet of the football programmes we have acquired so far. We hope that this link can be shared with potential donors so that they can see where the gaps are. We would like to stress that we prefer not to accept duplicates as this would leave us with the difficult decision of having to decide what to do with them, so we would ask that donations are only made where the gaps appear in the spreadsheet.”
If you have items that you would like to donate, you can drop them off at the Main Arts Library on College Road, opening times 8.30am – 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 12.00pm – 5.00pm Saturdays and Sundays, or contact Gwyn on 01248 383276 or by email at g.williams@bangor.ac.uk
