Bangor University congratulated all the athletes who are associated with the University and who represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia recently.

Each team member received a commemorative plaque from the University and also enjoyed a piece of ‘gold medal’ ceremonial cake.

Six athletes connected to the University took part in the games including Gareth Evans, 32, who works at Canolfan Brailsford, Gareth secured Wales’ first Gold Medal at the games in the men’s 69kg weightlifting event.

Other athletes who took part in weightlifting events included Seth Casidsid, a psychology graduate who works at Canolfan Brailsford; psychology student Catrin Jones; sports science student Harry Misangyi and Hannah Powell, a sports science graduate, who now works for Welsh Weightlifting based at Canolfan Brailsford.

Tesni Evans from Rhyl, who is a Bangor University Local Athlete Bursary winner, won a Bronze medal playing Squash at the games.

Bangor University Vice-Chancellor John G Hughes said: “You have done Wales proud and you have done Bangor University proud. You are fantastic role models for our University community and I congratulate you all on your achievements.”

Gareth Evans said: “I can’t thank Bangor University enough for the support they have given me with my Commonwealth adventure and hopefully bringing back the gold was just desserts for them.

“It was nice to be awarded with a nice plaque by the University, they have really shown their support and how much they appreciate what we have done at the competition as well. That was really good.”

University director of Sport Richard Bennett said: “We have invested in our facilities and in our elite athletes over the last few years, and it has been a huge honour to back these individuals in the Wales squad. We are delighted to be able to thank them for their superb performances.”
