It has been a busy period at Bangor University, with the work and studies in full flow, and a number of exciting developments and events as we leave winter and look towards spring.
At the beginning of the year, the University’s new Community Collaboration Fund opened. The fund has been established to encourage civic engagement activities with external partners. Six proposals were successful in the first call. We look forward to seeing these projects develop and share further information about them over the coming months, with the second call being launched in April/May.
In March, a productive meeting of the University’s Community Board was held. A range of matters were discussed of relevance to the University and external partners in Bangor and beyond. The annual Varsity event was also held in March, with Bangor University competing with Aberystwyth University in 44 sporting competitions, and we’re pleased to announce that Bangor University has lifted the trophy for the seventh consecutive year!
The Pontio programme for the community continues with monthly Caffi Babis, and weekly yoga sessions, and dance workshops for individuals living with Parkinson’s. The Bangor Music Festival was held in Pontio in February, which included a ‘Camau Cerdd’ (Steps in Music) session, introducing music to babies and young children. The University’s Dance Summer Show, led by students, will take place in May, and Ysgol Friars will showcase their production of ‘Matilda’ in the Bryn Terfel Theatre in June.
The M-SParc ‘On Tour’ location on Bangor High Street continues to thrive, with the site a popular place for students and locals to call by and take advantage of the working spaces, use the Ffiws Maker Space and attend workshops e.g. Repair Café for bikes, sewing machines or computers. ‘Egni 2023’, an event to discuss the region’s strategic energy projects with an emphasis on engaging with local young people, will be held in M-SParc on 16th May.
Treborth Botanic Garden was busy and lively recently as they held their Plant Sale, with a number of individuals and small businesses selling honey, crafts, soaps and local produce. Looking ahead, the Draig Beats Festival will take place in the Garden in Treborth on 10th June. A warm welcome to all at the popular event, which will raise money for Dr Sophie Williams (former Bangor University staff member now living in care) and open to families.
On behalf of University staff and students, we wish you a late Happy Easter and we look forward to updating you on the University’s work and relevant developments during the year.
