Bangor’s TGJones store will close in January 2027, with the Post Office operating inside the High Street shop also set to shut.
The closure was first reported by the North Wales Chronicle, which said it had received confirmation from both TGJones and Post Office Ltd.
The former WHSmith store is expected to close on Saturday, 9 January, following a closing-down sale. The exact closing date for the Post Office is still being finalised but is expected to be in early 2027.
A Post Office spokesperson told the Chronicle: “Consequently, TG Jones is to close its Bangor store.”
The Post Office has already advertised for someone to operate a replacement branch and has received expressions of interest from retailers. These are now being considered, although opening a replacement could take around six months.
TGJones also confirmed: “We have confirmed that our Bangor shop will close.”
The company said its priority was supporting affected employees and continuing to serve customers throughout the closure period.
The closure follows a major restructuring of TGJones, which took over WHSmith’s UK high-street business in 2025. The High Court approved the restructuring plan on 1 July 2026 after hearing that the company was experiencing serious financial difficulties.
Court documents show that the retailer expects to reduce its estate from 451 to approximately 302 stores. The plans include substantial rent reductions across parts of the estate and give some landlords the option to terminate leases.
TG Jones High Street Limited remains an active company and has not entered administration or winding-up proceedings.
Until a replacement branch is established, customers can use Maesgeirchen Post Office at 90 Penrhyn Avenue or Menai Bridge Post Office at 7 High Street.
Bangor Post Office remains open as normal for the time being.
