Bangor schoolchildren have been congratulated for contributing to the breaking of two record records, while celebrating the 100th birthday of Wales’ largest youth organisation, Urdd Gobaith Cymru.
Urdd is Wales’ largest youth organisation and today it celebrates its centenary. In order to celebrate the organisation’s 100th anniversary, the Urdd and its supporters attempted two world records, and have just announced their success in breaking them.
More than 80,000 people registered to upload their own covers of the song at 10:45, with the Urdd later saying it had broken Guinness World Records for the most videos of people singing the same song – The official anthem of the Urdd, hei mistar Urdd – uploaded to Facebook and Twitter in one hour.
It said more than 800 people uploaded videos to Facebook and 1,176 to Twitter.
The local Member of the Senedd for Arfon Siân Gwenllian, has congratulated local schools and individuals for contributing to the historic achievement: “Today, the Urdd did what it does best. It created an electric atmosphere throughout Wales as it attempted two world records.
“It made our young people proud to be Welsh, and proud to be Welsh-speakers.
“From Penygroes to Pentir, Llanberis to Llandygai, school children and other individuals in Arfon contributed to something amazing.
“The opportunities that Urdd Gobaith Cymru bestow upon our children are invaluable.
“Escape. Confidence. Creativity. Wellbeing. Employment. Entertainment. Resilience. Wales-wide and even international social networks. These are all things that the Urdd provide to our children.
“And not just children from Welsh-speaking backgrounds.
“It is well-established that language learning is easiest when young, and the benefits that multilingualism can grant a child are endless.
“The gift of our national language is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child, and the fantastic work that the Urdd does across Wales to facilitate this is commendable.
“I would like to congratulate them on reaching this milestone.”
