Two Bangor schoolboys and their teammates have returned home with heads held high after a remarkable performance at an international football tournament in Belgium, where they proudly represented Gwynedd, their schools, and Wales.
Zac Roberts and Archie McGrath, both students at Ysgol Friars and players for Bangor Saints FC, were key members of the C.P. Ysgolion Gwynedd (Schools) U14 squad that went unbeaten through the group stages and reached the final of the prestigious competition.
The team faced strong European opposition, including teams from France, Belgium, and Germany, but remained undefeated in regular time across all matches. After topping their group on Day 1 with a win and a draw, the boys progressed through the knockout stages to face Bracknell Town of England in the final.
In a tense and hard-fought match, the final ended 0-0, leading to a dramatic penalty shootout where the young Welsh side narrowly missed out on the title.
Daf Roberts, coach of Bangor Saints FC and proud mentor to both Zac and Archie, said: “I’m proud as punch with Zac, Archie, the coaches, and all the boys. They represented Wales superbly. Losing on penalties in the final is always tough, but what an experience for these lads. They’ve done their clubs, schools, and the country proud.
“This international outing has been a milestone moment for the young players, showcasing not only their individual talent but the strength of grassroots football in Gwynedd. The tournament has left lasting memories and invaluable experience for the boys, who now return to their local clubs with even more fire in their boots.
“Congratulations to Zac, Archie, and the entire C.P. Ysgolion Gwynedd U14 team for their fantastic achievement on the international stage.”
