Bangor Rugby Club have launched a fundraiser for the NHS, while setting themselves a challenge to keep themselves fit during the Covid-19 crisis.
The challenge called ‘From Our Club To Yours’ involves club members running, walking or cycling the distance of a weekly challenge to an ‘away game’.
As the club has no games due to current crisis, Bangor Rugby Club members have embraced the challenge and covered over 1,300 miles so far.
Joe Simpson from Bangor Rugby Club said: “The idea began when I was invited to a meeting with the senior club coaches to discuss how we can prepare the 1st XV players for pre season.
“We spoke in length about how players could run certain distances over a period of time with coaches taking note from a group on Strava.
“The idea developed when we discussed how we can have more of a buy in from players with the outcome being that we open the challenge to the club as a whole from the senior team down to the little stars and their families to stay active within government guidelines so the challenge moved to being a run or a walk.
“As we continued the discussions a suggestion was made about raising money for the Awyr Las charity, a charity in which the club has raised funds for in previous years which we all agreed would be a great way to motivate others to join in.
“Now we had the basic back bone of why and how the club will tackle the challenge we needed to decide on a distance. Many distances were mentioned however to create a theme for the challenge, we came up with the idea of ‘From our club to yours’.
“This would enable us to run to every away game and back within the week with members of the club contributing. Our first challenge would be to run to Nant Conwy and back and challenge them to do something similar or continue on their own journey to another club.
“So the challenge had started and within a few days realised that we would cover the distance in no time at all so we had to think of a bigger distance to cover.
“We met again later that week and within no time at all it was agreed the next target would be to add up the all round milage of all away trips Bangor RFC complete in a season and use that number as our target.
“The challenge was set and the club successfully completed the challenge by Saturday afternoon with a growing number of new participants to the Strava group with the club raising £500 for Awyr Las.
“Now we have set a new challenge which we look forward to announcing later this week w/b 04/05/2020.
“The club would like to invite anyone who would like to contribute either by donating to Awyr Las via the link or by taking part in the challenge and helping the club achieve the distance set.
“We hope everyone stays safe during these difficult times and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the club in due course.”
