The Bangor Foodshare initiative, organised by the city’s Plaid Cymru councillors, has appeared in this year’s Senedd’s Online Gallery of Champions after being nominated by local Member of the Senedd, Siân Gwenllian.

Members of the Senedd were invited to nominate champions from their constituencies to be part of the gallery. Portraits of champions nominated will be published daily on the Visit the Senedd social media accounts, Senedd Instagram, Senedd Facebook, Pierhead Twitter in November – December 2020.

The ‘Bangor Foodshare’ runs from the Plaid Cymru office at the top of the high street in Bangor on Sunday mornings between 10am and 12pm. It is part of the Fareshare scheme which distributes supermarket surplus to community groups for the benefit of those in need.

The nomination comes weeks after Brooke Graham, of Maesgeirchen, Bangor, appeared in the Online Gallery of Champions for raising £175 for the NHS Charity Awyr Las.

Siân Gwenllian MS, who represents Bangor in the Senedd and nominated the Bangor Foodshare for the Online Gallery reacted: “I’m thrilled to have nominated this hard-working, compassionate team of volunteers.

“The existence of such food schemes are a damning reflection of our political system, and especially of the Conservative austerity agenda, but in a year that has been distinctly challenging financially, these initiatives that have sprouted across the constituency, are encouraging.

“The duty of care that such volunteers display is a glimmer of hope in otherwise dark times.

“This, of course, isn’t the only example of Bangor people coming to the fore for the benefit of others during the pandemic.

“The story of Brooke Martin of Maesgeirchen, pupils of Friars that held a food collection, and many other volunteers fills us with hope.

“I, along with my counterpart in Westminster Hywel Williams MP would normally have held a food collection at our constituency office on the High St. in Bangor, but our offices are still closed because of Covid restrictions.

“Therefore, I’m delighted to have moved the collection online.”
