Bangor’s home-grown youth performing arts group named BBC Community Group Award Finalists

Just days after celebrating their fifth birthday, Maes-G ShowZone has received an unforgettable surprise — the beloved Bangor-based group has been named a finalist in the prestigious BBC Cymru Wales Make a Difference Awards 2025, under the Community Group category.

The honour recognises outstanding efforts made by community groups across Wales, and ShowZone’s place on the shortlist is a huge milestone for a project built on passion, love, and relentless dedication. Founded in 2020 in response to the pandemic, ShowZone has grown into a vibrant force that now supports nearly 80 children from across the Bangor area.

“We were so shocked when the email came through,” said Steffie Williams Roberts, Creative Director. “This group was built on hope during a time of real uncertainty — and five years later, we’re still here, giving every child the chance to shine.”

ShowZone, co-founded by Steffie Williams Roberts, Naomi Crane and Eirian Williams Roberts, is run entirely by a dedicated team of full-time volunteers. The group prides itself on being inclusive and accessible to all children, with no significant cost barriers to participation. More than just song and dance, ShowZone builds confidence, self-esteem and pride — not only in its members, but across the community it serves.

Eirian Williams Roberts added, “We’ve been blown away by how many people nominated us — parents, councillors, local housing officers, even community leaders. What this tells us is that ShowZone matters. It’s not just a group — it’s a heartbeat in this community.”

Parents and supporters agree. One parent wrote: “ShowZone isn’t just about performing — it’s about giving our kids a purpose, a place to belong. The transformation I’ve seen in my daughter’s confidence is unbelievable.”

Another said: “You’ve created something truly special. The kids aren’t just learning to sing and dance — they’re learning to believe in themselves.”

With the awards ceremony set for September, and the news only just shared with their young members, spirits are sky-high.

Whatever the outcome, Maes-G ShowZone is already a winner — in the eyes of the community, in the lives of the children they support, …and now officially recognised by BBC Cymru Wales.

If you’d like to see what all the buzz is about, Maes-G ShowZone will be performing their full-scale summer production this July 26th & 27th at Theatr Bryn Terfel, Pontio. With dazzling choreography, powerful vocals, and heart-stirring performances — all created and delivered by local children — it promises to be a celebration of community talent like no other.
