Incidents involving lorries on Britannia and Menai Bridge on Saturday caused gridlock on both sides of the Menai Strait.

A crash involving two lorries on the Britannia Bridge, just before midday, led to the closure of the westbound carriageway.

Traffic was then diverted over the Menai suspension bridge, but a lorry became stuck between the narrow arches of the bridge.

With lanes on both bridges closed, tailbacks soon began to build up with some motorists stuck for several hours. Bangor was gridlocked and queues began to form on both the Anglesey side of the bridge and down the A55.

Despite the Britannia Bridge reopening at 13:40, it was several hours before Menai Bridge reopened.

No ambulances were required to attend the incidents and there were no reports of any injuries.

North Wales Police thanked motorists for the patience while they dealt with the incidents.
