A brand new image published by Empire Magazine has revealed more about the role Jeremy Irons will play in the Watchmen series which arrives later this month.

While HBO has declined to admit as much, fans are mostly convinced that Irons is playing Adrian Veidt a.k.a. Ozymandias, the villain from the comic book Watchmen.

HBO spent a month filming scenes at Penrhyn Castle in Bangor last year, but the nature of the filming was kept a closely guarded secret.

The new image shows Jeremy Irons as Ozymandias riding a white horse on the grounds of his manor (Penrhyn Castle), far away from the action involving costumed vigilantes and the vast conspiracy mentioned in the official Watchmen trailer.

The synopsis for the series reads, “Set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws, drama series Watchmen, debuting this fall from executive producer Damon Lindelof (HBO’s The Leftovers) embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own.”

The cast of Watchmen also includes Regina King, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.

Watchmen is HBO’s first attempt at superheroes and it looks to be a slick, modern adaptation of the classic comic, rather than the 2009 movie. Courtesy of Damon Lindelof, the series appears to be an enthralling mixture of new and old with quotes familiar to fans of the original comic.

Watchmen will be available on Sky Atlantic and Now TV from 21 October.
