Bangor born Nathan Broadhead continued to impress during his loan spell at League One side Burton Albion as the Brewers beat Premier League side Bournemouth 2-0 in the Carabao Cup.
Three second-half floodlight failures resulted in 28 minutes of added time, with the referee about to abandon the game he was reminded by the other officials that under FA rules a game can only be abandoned after 30 minutes of delays.
Oliver Sarkic had given Burton a 14th minute lead against a much changed Bournemouth side and Broadhead nearly added to the lead before half-time, but his dipping shot at goal was palmed over the crossbar by Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers.
There was much hilarity when the 4th official held up the board to signal 28 minutes of added time but it was Burton and Nathan Broadhead who would have the last laugh.
Travers produced another stunning save to tip a Broadhead volley around the post, but the 21 year-old Welshman would be rewarded, steering home a low cross at the back post to ensure the win and a home-tie against Leicester City in the next round of the cup.
The goal was Broadhead’s third for Burton this season and he’s certainly making a good impression at the club. He was given a standing ovation when he was substituted late on and he‘s certainly winning the hearts of the Burton fans.
A left-winger, Broadhead was a key figure for Everton’s under-23 outfit last season; helping David Unsworth’s team to the Premier League 2 title.
With 18 months left to run on his Everton contract, the youngster will hope to use his current loan spell to earn a Goodison Park opportunity.
Everton fans love to see their own academy prospects earn the chance to shine on the first-team stage and they took to Twitter last night to show their appreciation. Let‘s hope Everton manager Marco Silva is equally impressed.
