A community garden is planned in Bangor, in memory of Maesgeirchen community leader and youth worker Paul Hockaday, described by those who knew him as a ‘community champion.’
The project, which will be funded by ‘Communities First’ hopes to create a small garden in Paul’s memory on the green area outside the Partneriaeth Maesgeirchen Partnership (PMP) office. There will also be opportunities for local people to become involved and gain qualifications whist being part of the project.
Paul, who died earlier this year aged 53, worked as a community development worker at the PMP in Maesgeirchen, being tasked with improving the quality of life for residents, in particular young people.
Paul began working in the Maesgeirchen in 2002, making a huge difference to the lives of residents, by raising aspirations and building a strong sense of local pride.
Local Councillor Nigel Pickavance said: “Paul had worked very hard on the estate as a community project worker. He has helped so many people on this estate in many, many ways and for many years. He has been instrumental in the success of PMP and led many projects for our Community.
“This great project will be fitting to the legacy that Paul Hockaday has left us.”
