A protest against is being planned against Boris Johnson in Bangor on Wednesday, just hours after he is likely to be announced as the next leader of the Conservative Party and new Prime Minister.

Voting in the Tory leader contest will close at 5pm on Tuesday. The next occupant of Number 10 Downing Street will be either Boris Johnson – regarded as the frontrunner – or Jeremy Hunt. Only Conservative Party members are allowed vote in the contest, about 160,000 people.

Theresa May will face Jeremy Corbyn in her last Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, before meeting the Queen to officially resign. On the same day, at about 5pm, the winner of the Tory leadership contest will hold his first speech in Downing Street and begin appointing Cabinet ministers if necessary.

Protestors are unhappy that the process of him becoming Prime Minister is ‘undemocratic’ and fear that Mr Johnson will take the UK to a No Deal Brexit. They have also accused the former Foreign Secretary of having a track record of bigotry, homophobic remarks, racism and complete disregard for anyone not born into the upper classes.

Protest organiser, Plaid Cymru Cllr Owen J Hurcum, said: “On Wednesday it is almost certain that Boris Johnson will be coronated to the position of Prime Minister by an ‘electorate’ that makes up just 0.0025% of the population.

“This would be reason enough to protest his elevation to this office, however Boris Johnson’s Premiership would be far more than just an afront to our democracy. Boris Johnson represents everything that is toxic about politics at the moment and we must show him from day one his views do not represent us and he is not welcome in our community.

“The Bangor I love, we love, prides itself on being a progressive community. We have local groups seeking to sponsor refugees and help them settle into life over here, we hosted an LGBTQ+ Pride event last year, we are the largest Welsh speaking city in the world, and most importantly all of us say no to Bigotry.

“Johnson’s homophobic words are not welcome here, his Islamaphobic behaviour is not welcome here, his racist comments are not welcome here, his casual misogyny is not welcome here and his toxic division does not have a place on our streets.

“So join us at the Clock Tower at 6pm on Wednesday so we can shout loud and proud on day one of his premiership that he does not represent us and Bangor says “Dim Bigots, Dim Boris – No to Bigots, No to Boris.”

The protest will take place at Bangor Clock Tower at 6pm on Wednesday 24 July. More info here: https://www.facebook.com/events/367698980558693/
