Pupils from Ysgol y Garnedd in Bangor have won the first round of the Reading for Wales Welsh Books Competition – ‘Darllen Dros Gymru’ – organised by the Welsh Books Council.
The scheme is administered locally by Gwynedd Council’s Library Service and its aim is to celebrate reading and encourage children to enjoy reading Welsh books and allow them to discuss and present them in their own unique voices.
The competition is free to schools and is open to Years 3–6, offering a wide selection of books on a reading list to engage a cross-section of pupils. Every child who reaches the final rounds is given a free book and cash prizes are given to the winning schools.
The winners from Ysgol y Garnedd were Efa, Elen, Hanna Gwyn and Hanna Elin in the Years 3 and 4 category.
Sioned Rowlands, Librarian for Gwynedd Schools said: “It was a pleasure to discuss the books with all the teams and to meet so many children who are obviously thrilled and enjoyable reading Welsh books. Best wishes and congratulations to both teams.”
Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Community Development, added: “It is great to see so many Gwynedd primary schools supporting and participating in the competition. It’s a great achievement for them to reach the final of a national competition.”
The pupils will now be representing their school and county in the final round of Darllen Dros Gymru in Aberystwyth in June.
