RNLI volunteers at both Beaumaris and Conwy lifeboats received a launch request at 11:06 am on Monday, 6 May, from the U.K Coastguard, to locate and assist a ten metre motor vessel that was taking on water in the vicinity of the Menai Strait.
The Beaumaris inshore lifeboat was launched with a portable pump aboard at 11:14 am and contacted the casualty vessel on Marine VHF (Very High Frequency) radio once afloat. By using the direction finder ability on the VHF set aboard the lifeboat they managed to locate the position of the boat and proceeded directly to the location.
Once on scene a crew member was placed aboard the craft, which had one male aboard. The lifeboat man was able to ascertain that it would not be necessary to use the portable pump in this instance. The Conwy inshore lifeboat had now arrived at the incident and they also placed a crew member aboard the casualty vessel.
It was decided to escort the boat to her moorings at Conwy and for a while both lifeboats remained with the craft until satisfied that the Conwy lifeboat would be able to continue the escort duties alone. The Beaumaris lifeboat then recovered her crew member from the motor vessel.
