Bangor Women’s Aid, who provide a refuge and support women and children who have experienced domestic abuse, have recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary.

Funded by the local authority, Bangor Women’s Aid also receive support from local groups and businesses and the public. Along with a refuge setting in the Arfon community BWA also facilitate the ‘Freedom Programme’ which highlights the effects of domestic abuse and predatory behaviour.

Bangor Women’s Aid also fund a children and young person worker within Arfon, supporting young people on a one to one basis and within local schools.

The anniversary has been celebrated with a month long festival ‘Gwyl y Ferch’ – A not for profit event created to celebrate Bangor Women’s Aid 40th Anniversary and to fundraise while celebrating Welsh women and their talent.

The festival included art, music, writing and workshops and was facilitated by Esme Livingston and Ffion Pritchard in collaboration with CARN (Caernarfon Artists Regional Network) with the goal of using the arts to raise money and awareness for Bangor Women’s Aid and the incredible work they do.

Ffion Pritchard said: “The festival has included an open exhibition of local female artists and an intensive program of events taking place at Balaclafa CARN during March.

“We close this Saturday with a little celebration, where we will hand over our raised funds. We’re going forward from our first run of events with lots of new ideas!”
