Bangor’s Hirael Flood Protection Scheme has been named winner of the ICE Wales Cymru Award for Diversity 2025, recognising both its engineering achievement and commitment to inclusive community engagement.

The £6 million project, completed in 2024, now safeguards 194 properties, key public services, and vital infrastructure from tidal flooding. It features a 310-metre sea wall, raised roads and promenades, and three flood gates designed to protect the community for the next 50 years.

The Diversity Award recognises either a project team or an individual that best champions all aspects of diversity, showing fairness, inclusion, respect, and equality throughout every stage of the work. It is not just about the finished structure or infrastructure; it’s about how the project is carried out and who has been involved, consulted, and included.

Developed by Ymgynghoriaeth Gwynedd Consultancy (YGC) and delivered by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, the scheme was funded through the Welsh Government’s Coastal Risk Management Programme in partnership with Gwynedd Council.

Beyond flood defence, the project has revitalised the seafront with new lighting, improved public spaces, and enhanced coastal access, benefitting both residents and visitors.

Judges praised the scheme’s innovative community consultation, ensuring local voices, including those of underrepresented groups, were heard throughout the process.
