Maes-G ShowZone has been named the winner of the Community Group category at the BBC Cymru Wales Make a Difference Awards 2025, cementing its position as one of Bangor’s most impactful and inspiring community organisations.
The ceremony took place at the prestigious Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, in the Hoddinott Hall, home to the BBC Welsh National Orchestra, and was hosted by Welsh TV and radio personalities Caryl Parry Jones and Lucy Jones, with live entertainment from “Y Llais” judge Aleighcia Scott.
Selected from over 700 nominations across Wales and whittled down to four finalists in each category, Maes-G ShowZone stood out for its unwavering dedication to young people and the wider community. The organisation was nominated by a cross-section of supporters, including Cllr Nigel Pickavance, local business owners, local government officers and many Bangor residents reflecting the broad impact the group has across Maesgeirchen and Bangor.
The award was announced as the final category of the event, with presenter Gethin Jones noting: “Picking an overall winner was so, so tough. Thank you to all of you for the incredible work that you do. What’s been created by our winner is a symbol of resilience, inclusivity and community spirit. It’s a lifeline for young children, some of whom have had the toughest start to life. A safe space, no judgement, and they’re not hindered because of something that is out of their control.”
Accepting the award on behalf of ShowZone were co-founders Steffie Williams Roberts, Naomi Crane, and Eirian Williams Roberts.
Reflecting on the honour, Steffie Williams Roberts said: “We were absolutely shocked to learn we’d been chosen as finalists but to then be announced as winners is beyond words. This recognition isn’t just about us — it’s about every child, volunteer, and family who makes ShowZone what it is. The judges didn’t know us personally; they judged solely on what we do, why we do it, and the difference it makes in our community. Being named winners is a validation that all the effort, the heart, and the hours we put in truly matter. We are so proud, and we hope it inspires even more young people to believe in themselves and their potential.”
This award celebrates Maes-G ShowZone’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, inclusive, and affordable performing arts opportunities to the children of Maesgeirchen. Over the past five years, the group has grown from a handful of members to over 80 young people, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers. Through weekly rehearsals and large-scale performances, ShowZone empowers children to develop confidence, teamwork, social skills, and pride in themselves and their community — achievements that resonate far beyond the stage.
The achievements of Maes-G ShowZone showcase the dedication of its founders, volunteers, and members, and serve as a source of pride for Maesgeirchen and the wider Bangor community. The group continues to shine as a beacon of inspiration, creativity, and opportunity for young people in Bangor, embodying the spirit and resilience of the area.
