Rakesh Kumar, a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist based at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, has been awarded an MBE for his services to the black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities in North Wales.

Rakesh, who is married with two young children, has worked in North Wales for the past 18 years.

He was appointed an MBE in June this year for his “services to the black, Asian and minority ethnic communities” and received his MBE from Prince Willaim at Winsor Castle on 16th October.

In an effort to address the unique health challenges faced by Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) communities, Rakesh launched a successful initiative to promote mental and physical well-being through exercise and swimming. Recognising the disproportionate impact of multi-morbidities on BAME individuals, the project aimed to reduce the risk of chronic conditions and improve overall health.

In addition to the successful implementation of the BAME health and well-being program, Rakesh has demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering community engagement and promoting inclusivity through various social events, including celebrating different religious festivals, and providing opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together and connect.

These events have served as platforms for cultural exchange, understanding, and community building. Rakesh has also been actively involved in organising charity events, raising funds and awareness for important causes. These efforts have contributed to the betterment of the local community and demonstrated a dedication to social responsibility.

Rakesh said: “I was incredibly honoured to receive an award from Prince William at Windsor Castle.

“My visit to Windsor Castle to receive the MBE award was an unforgettable experience. As I entered the castle grounds, I was struck by the grandeur and history of the place.

“The opportunity to explore the castle’s special areas was a privilege, and I was captivated by the stunning architecture, ornate decorations, and rich history.

“The award ceremony itself was a momentous occasion. Walking through the grand halls and meeting other esteemed recipients was a humbling experience.

“During our conversation, he expressed interest in my various projects and shared his own experiences of North Wales, where he served as a Search and Rescue Helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force. His insights and support were truly inspiring.”
