North Wales Police are warning residents and business owners in the Gwynedd North area, including Bangor, to be vigilant for suspicious activity after an increase in diesel thefts over the weekend.

The fuel crisis has sparked scenes of chaos at the pumps as drivers scramble to fill up their cars with deliveries hit by HGV driver shortages.

Earlier this week, the AA said it had seen a spike in breakdown callouts due to people filling up with the wrong fuel.

Calls have been made to prioritise emergency service workers, care workers and NHS staff, with the Government putting the Army on stand-by to jump in and deliver petrol and diesel to stations forced to close.

There is a shortfall of around 100,000 lorry drivers, partly because of tougher immigration rules. But the Government has announced it will offer 5,000 temporary visas to foreign lorry drivers in the run-up to Christmas.

North Wales Police advised:

  • Keep your vehicle secure when not in use.
  • Park in secure garages or well-lit areas when possible and if it is for personal use, keep it in sight of your property.
  • If you have a fuel tank, consider fitting a fuel tank alarm and regularly record fuel levels so you know if any has gone missing.
  • If you see anyone acting suspiciously around parked vehicles, please report it to the police via their website or by calling 101.
