Siân Gwenllian, Plaid Cymru’s candidate for next month’s Senedd elections has urged locals to support Bangor High Street after “a series of heavy blows.”
Speaking about the future of Wales’ longest High Street, the Plaid Cymru candidate for Arfon warned that: “The city centre is under threat like many others following the growth of out-of-town stores, the closure of some famous brands and the phenomenal growth of internet shopping during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The fire on the High Street added to the problems and I have been pressing for a solution.
“Gwynedd Council has confirmed that the programme of works remains on track.
“The crane has now been positioned onto the foundations and demolition work began this week on 164/166 High Street.
“It is hoped the road will reopen in early June.”
The candidate for the Plaid-Labour battleground of Arfon was visiting the town centre as part of her election campaign, and talked of being “uplifted to see it busy, even if many of the cafes are still closed.”
Siân Gwenllian said: “Going to Bangor High Street is a social event for many of us and I look forward to working with Bangor City Council, the Bangor BID, Bangor Partnership and others on their innovative plans to bring life back to the city centre.
“I urge you to shop local and support Bangor businesses.”
